While Snoop Dogg is not playing at the Northrop Auditorium anytime soon he IS playing on the West Bank at the Cabooze. And Snoop Dogg is not playing once, but TWICE on January 25th. The late show sold out so fast that Snoop's crew added an early show at 5:30 - which is also an all ages show!

Snoop D - O - double G is touring in support of his new single "Get Wet." Also, Snoop has been in the news a bunch lately regarding his apparent requested presence at the royal wedding. I don't know how much of that rumor I believe. I would like to think that Prince William is really THAT cool and wants one of the coolest dudes on the planet at his wedding. But then again do you REALLY think that Queen Elizabeth is going to allow the Doggfather to sing about "Gin and Juice" at her precious grandson's wedding of the century?

If you are looking for holiday gift ideas for someone difficult to buy for maybe take a look at the upcoming ballet and dance events at the Northrop. Northrop Auditorium tickets are on sale now for the winter dance season which primarily includes ballets.

The Aspen Santa Fe Ballet will take the stage on Tuesday, March 8th at 7:30. Their performance is called "Trace, In Hidden Seconds, Red Sweet."

The Paul Taylor Dance Company stars in "Cloven Kingdom, Brief Encounters, Esplanade" on Tuesday, November 30th. A little early for holiday gifts, but sounds interesting nonetheless.

February 3rd, 2011 the Northrop Auditorium will host "Swan Lake" from the Voronezh State Ballet Theatre of Russia.

Does the Northrop Auditorium Need Upgrades?

I'm a guest blogger today for the Northrop Auditorium website. I come to the blog asking one major question: Does the Northrop need upgrades to attract more big ticket performers? We know what the Northrop Auditorium is and what it is like. Unfortunately, the Northrop Auditorium does not attract big ticket performers. So my question is what recommendations would you give the Northrop Auditorium in order to get bigger names? Feel free to leave comments and suggestions.

Not a lot has been going on the Northrop lately. However, one very notable public figure will be making a very rare special appearance this spring: The Dalai Lama.

Mariucci Northrop Auditorium tickets are on sale now for the May 8th Dalai Lama event. Expect security to be abundant and the campus area to be hectic. Maybe finals week is not the best week for this appearance. Although I am sure the Center for Spirituality and Healing (who is presenting the event) had little to do with the date. The Dalai Lama will speak when the Dalai Lama will speak, no?

This will be the Dalai Lama's first trip to the US since 2001. The theme of the event is "One Heart, One Mind, One Soul." Not only seen as a spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama will speak on his ethics, happiness, harmonies, identity, culture, and religion.

Mariucci Northrop Auditorium tickets are on sale now for this event, however, run a quite a steep price. Ticket prices go up to over $200 per ticket. That is a little steep for the everyday college student. This is a once in a lifetime event - perhaps its something that you cannot really 'put' a price on?

Furthur tickets

Nope, that is not a spelling mishap. That is really how Phil Lesh and Bob Weir spell their musical outfit, Furthur. Loved by Greatful Deadheads and hippies alike.

The touring band that Phil and Bob are touring with is quite an impressive cast. Jeff Chimenti (of RatDog), Joe Russo (toured with the beloved Trey Anastasio), and John Kadlecik (Dark Star Orchestra). That is pretty much the dream list to any jam band lover's guest list, no?

Formed in 2009, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir created Furthur. Before then they crossed paths again they had been touring independently. I think the Further show will do well in Minneapolis, we love our jam bands around here. One of the more beloved local bands is Trampled By Turtles.

Lady Antebellum tickets

Are you read for some Lady A? Lady Antebellum is at the Northrop Auditorium tomorrow for a sold out show. If you are still looking for Northrop Auditorium tickets for the Lady Antebellum show you might want to snap them up asap. The only way to get them is in the secondary market and there are not many of them.

Lady Antebellum is touring with there "I need you now 2010 Tour." The tour has sold out in every city it's booked in, Chicago even has two shows. Lady Antebellum was recently nominated for 5 American Music Awards - one of their competitors in the 'best group' category is Train. Now, I am no country fan, but I will be rooting for Lady A any day before I root for Train.

Looking for Lady Antebellum tickets? Good luck - the Northrop Auditorium has a pretty hot show on their hands. To tell you the truth, I do not know a whole lot about lady Antebellum - I know that they should for sure have booked a larger venue, like the Target Center.

Lady Antebellum reached the most desired success that a country band could want: crossover success. Their song "Need You Know" was a top 40 hit on the county charts and the pop charts. Few artists can achieve dual market success and when they do it is always a hot concert ticket!

The Nashville, Tennessee trio has had quite a year. They won the Grammy for best country song in 2009 and made a splash at the American Country Music awards as well. The trio had an 'in' in the music industry, singer Hillary Scott is the daughter of country music star Linda Davis and guitarist Charley Kelley is the brother to pop star Josh Kelley. It's easy to get your foot in the door when you're already in, no?

Lady Antebellum tickets are on sale now through secondary vendors, however, it looks like the Northrop Auditorium tickets are sold out from the Northrop.

America's Got Talent Live! October 16th

On Saturday October 16th, America's Got Talent Live will be performing at the Northrop Auditorium. The hit show is launching it's first ever tour with the country's most dynamic and diverse entertainers. Hosting the tour will be Jerry Springer and will feature the season 5 winner as well as the finalists and fan favorites from the show. Northrop Auditorium tickets

In April I attended a sold out event at the Weisman Art Museum called "WHAMplified." It ended up being a totally sold out show with Har Mar Superstar. My friend Rachel and I had a blast, it was a unique concert experience. I have been to many concerts, but this is the only one I attended that was IN an art gallery.

WHAMplified! is an event that the Weisman has about 3 times a year. The Weisman has just announced their new installment featuring local acts Solid Gold and Lookbook. Hello! This line up is awesome! Solid Gold is always a local favorite and Lookbook is an up and coming band that just got back from their first national tour, they also just headlined their first night at First Avenue's mainroom last weekend.

WHAMplified tickets are on sale now along with other great Northrop Auditorium tickets and events, like Neil Young. WHAMplified tickets will sell out, there is very limited space - not to mention everyone will want to be at the Solid Gold / Lookbook show on July 17th. Sadly, I will not be making it to this one, I will be at another show!

Romantica Tickets

The Northrop is throwing a free concert tonight with local loves, Romantica. Northrop Auditorium tickets are free for this show! If you are bored on a Monday night, why not check out a great show. Maybe if the weather is nice I could see the Northrop moving the show outside. The Northrop is known for their outdoor music concert series, however, it is not usual that they grab such a great act like Romantica to headline.

Free Northrop Auditorium tickets are available at the door for this show, there is no on sale for the free show ahead of time. Be prepared to get their early to get a spot.

Romantica's success has been all over the place. They play more local shows here in Minnesota than you can count, they have opened for Ryan Adams, and toured with Carrie Rodriguez (they played at the Varsity just a month ago.) Romantica have a lot of upcoming shows in Minneapolis including Bastille Days (with my favorite The Red Pens), the Basilica Block Party, an opening spot for the Jayhawks' Sunday night show, and two MN State Fair shows. Romantica has a lot on their plate this summer playing at some of the bigger events around town, don't miss their free show at the Northrop tonight!!

Neil Young tickets

After an odd stint at the Xcel Energy Center, Neil Young has made it back to the Northrop for a solo show. The show is not acoustic, but it will be just Neil. I want to go oh - so - bad, however as usual with ol' Neil Young, Northrop Auditorium tickets will set you back a few pennies. Actually, A TON of pennies. Neil Young is a once in a life time kind of musician, but still, he charges his fans a lot of money.

Northrop Auditorium tickets are on sale now for the July 29th Neil Young show, Bert Jansch opens the show. It has been awhile sine the Northrop Auditorium has had a show - April's Chelsea Handler shows to be exact.

Neil Young is advertising his tour as "solo, acoustic, and electric" so he should have more than enough chances to showcase his extensive catalog. What I wouldn't give to hear "Old Man" "Alabama" and all of his other amazing jams. Northrop Auditorium tickets might just have to drop out of the sky for this one for me. There is not a lot going on at the Northrop these days. Past Northrop Auditorium performers, the Zac Brown Band have announced a show at Mystic Lake Casino. Fans are upset about this change because the Mystic Lake tickets are double what he was charging for the Northrop Auditorium tickets for his last show here. The Star Tribune even featured an article on the new Zac Brown Band ticket price jump.

In other news, both Chelsea Handler shows ended up being a great success and selling out, even the late show. Minneapolis comedy fans proved to be big fan of the Chelsea Lately star. Though sadly, I heard Chewy was not there. What is a Chelsea Handler show with no Chewy?!!

While the Chelsea Handler shows were going on at the Northrop, I was just across the mall area of the UofMN campus at the Weisman Art Museum at another sold out show" WHAMplified. Minnesota's own Har Mar Superstar was the headliner, and despite it being a million plus degrees in there it was a great show. I have seen Har Mar Superstar in just about every venue in the twin cities area so it was cool to see him in another setting: an art gallery. The 'stage' was in the conference/meeting room wing. Even thought Har Mar probably won't be in the next WHAMplified, I would totally go to another one just for the experience - I highly recommend it.

Saturday, April 3rd is going to be a hub of excitement for the University of Minnesota. There not one, but two Chelsea Handler shows at the Northrop Auditorium. In Dinkeytown, this awesome little band called the Black Lips are playing at the Varsity Theater and it is now official: the Har Mar Superstar WHAMplified event at the Weisman Art Museum is sold out! I am so glad that I purchased my ticket in advance, I know a lot of people who were planning on buying their at the door. Instead, since Har Mar is a pretty cool guy, he will probably just play an after party! This is his home turf, Har Mar will not disappoint.

On another note, there are still Northrop Auditorium tickets available for both Chelsea handler shows. And might I add, there are really good Northrop Auditorium tickets available for both Chelsea handler shows. Her book, Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang is in ever top 10 best seller list so I am sure she will have a mouth full to talk about of course at her 8pm and 11pm shows. I don't know how many Minneapolis comedy fans are going to be able to stay up that late to see the 11pm show - it takes a lot of people to sell out 2 Northrop Auditorium shows.

There are so many things to do in Minneapolis on April 3rd, I have no idea how we are all supposed to decide between Chelsea Handler, Beach House, The Black Lips with the Box Elders, Har Mar Superstar, the Red Pens, Spoon with Deerhunter, or Puscifer. And then to think Passion Pit is the next night. April is going to be exhausting!

Conan O'Brien tickets

Perhaps the hottest ticket in town right now is Conan O'Brien's just announced and totally sold out show at the Orpheum Theater.

Conan! What are you thinking?! The Northrop Auditorium holds wayyyy more people than the Orpheum and you would have been able to accommodate more of your die hard fans that are dying to see you. Northrop Auditorium tickets would have flown out the door just as Orpheum Theater tickets did!

Conan O'Brien is on his "Legally Prohibited From Being Funny On Television Tour" which will include appearances by his side-kick, Andy Richter. I really wish that Conan would have announced his show at the Northrop instead.

If you are looking for Conan O'Brien Orpheum Theater tickets good luck. They are very hot tickets - everyone wants to see Coco - myself included. Craig Ferguson, Eddie Griffin, and of course, Chelsea Handler all have comedy shows coming up, but nothing is as anticipated and Conan O'Brien. There was such a hullabaloo about the Tonight Show that everyone wants to see what he has to say about it ... and in person nonetheless. I must admit, I am intrigued to see the man who once owned a Chuck Norris lever. That is not something you see every day. Since Conan is banned from television until September 1st, 2010. So what else is there to do...? Why place a sold out Orpheum Theater show in Minneapolis among other places. Conan has already sold out THREE nights in Chicago.

Ground broke on the Northrop Auditorium in 1928. The site that it is now on used to be the College of Pharmacy's garden. The Northrop Dance seasons are very important to the history of the auditorium. The first dance season began in 1970-71 with the Northrop's commitment to be a premier international ballet and contemporary, national, and cultural dance venues.

If you are on the U of MN campus the Northrop Auditorium is a beautiful building that is worthy of a tour. The Northrop Auditorium's history is shown throughout the entire building, every renovation takes special steps to preserve the rich and historic setting of the Northrop Auditorium building.

Restaurants by the Northrop

There are not a ton of restaurants by the Northrop that are not college bars or fast food. The one thing the UofMN is missing is fine dining. But then again, why would you put up an upscale restaurant when the main neighborhood clientele is college students.

When I think of a 'nice place' to have dinner by the Northrop Auditorium, Loring Pasta Bar comes to mind. It is a unique one of a kind space that is beautifully decorated. In the summer the front panels of the building come off so the 15th Avenue side is completely open. The Loring Pasta Bar offers a unique atmosphere that cannot be replicated.

If you're not in the mood for Stub n Herb's greasy bar food, Big 10 or Jimmy Johns subs, McDonalds, or Mesa Pizza or Pizza Hut Loring Pasta bar is your place. They specialize in affordable pasta dishes and awesome appetizers. You can read their full menu here.

Also, the Loring Pasta Bar offers a 30% off your total bill with your student ID. Which you can use at any time except 6-9pm on Fridays and Saturdays. For a restaurant by the Northrop Auditorium just off campus that is a very generous discount. Since the Varsity Theater and Loring Pasta Bar are owned by the same person, you can also receive a 10% off discount at the Loring on the night of your Varsity Theater show. All you need to do is present your ticket stub when you pay your bill.

After you have purchased your Northrop Auditorium tickets for the Chelsea Handler show or an upcoming dance performance you can chose from a few Northrop Auditorium restaurants, but my recommendation is always going to be the Loring Pasta Bar!


Fun fact: Loring Pasta Bar has won the City Pages' 'Coolest Bathroom in Minneapolis' award more than one year in a row.

Are you ready for more Chelsea Handler?! Well, apparently Chelsea Handler's promotors think we are. Northrop Auditorium tickets for the SECOND Chelsea Handler show go on sale this Friday. Chelsea Handler's first show at 8pm must have made Northrop Auditorium tickets a hot commodity because there is now a show at 11pm. I think that time is going to be a little late for Minneapolis comedy fans, but at least the show is on a Saturday night. If it would have been on a Thursday or Sunday it is doubtful that any Northrop Auditorium tickets would sell out for the second show!

This is a week of second shows! Bon Jovi has announced that they are adding an additional Xcel Energy Center show on April 8th. At least Chelsea Handler's people are more on top of things that Bon Jovi's. Xcel Energy Center tickets for the second Bon Jovi show go on sale Friday as well, however, I am not sure how this one is going to pan out. The second show is on a Thursday night, which may be a hard sell considering most of Bon Jovi's fans will have to work the next day! Bon Jovi, what are you thinking? Friday or Saturday nights only!!!!

Uh. Oh. I am officially double booked. April 3rd, 2010 I am already supposed to be at the Varsity Theater's Black Lips show. But it looks like I may have to bail on those plans, it appears something else has come up. While you will not need Northrop Auditorium tickets for this show and it looks like my Varsity Theater tickets for the Black Lips will be tossed, you will be needing a Weisman Art Museum ticket. One of my favorite local guys, Har Mar Superstar, is going to be the musical guest at the next WAMplified event at the Weisman Art Museum on the U of MN campus.

One ticket to this show will not only pay for you admission to the concert to see Har Mar Superstar, but admission includes 2 drink tickets and a tour of the museum. WAMplified is an event that the Weisman Art Museum has 3 times a year and it incorporates music with the current exhibition the museum is showcasing.

Northrop Auditorium tickets Weisman Art Museum tickets for WAMplified are on sale now. Minneapolis music fans are going to have a severly hard time deciding what to do on the night of Saturday, April 3rd. Beachhouse is at the Cedar Cultural Center, the Black Lips are at the Varsity Theater, and now Har Mar Superstar at the Weisman. Being a music fan can be exhausting sometimes!

If you have recovered enough from the cancellation of Mariah Carey's show and were still hoping to make it over the U of MN's Northrop Auditorium for a show then maybe you would want to check out one of their many dance shows or ballets. There are a lot of Northrop Auditorium tickets for these events and are priced fairly reasonably.

Mariah Carey tickets

Sadly, I hate to report that it looks like Mariah Carey is no longer making a stop in Minneapolis on her Angels Advocate tour. The February date was on her website (however, no ticket information) for quite some time, however, that date is no longer listed. However, she now has two dates at the Chicago Theater in Chicago, IL on February 13th and 14th. If only we could have had Mariah Carey here on Valentine's Day - that would have made Northrop Auditorium tickets a very hot item for this year's Cupid holiday. What a better way to celebrate Valentine's Day than with Mariah Carey singing top 40 love songs from the last 20 years? Well, I could certainly think of a few - like buying Minnesota Wild tickets and checking out the game at the Xcel against the Canucks - but hey, to each their own!

If you were really dead set on going to a show at the Northrop Auditorium there are still plenty of Northrop Auditorium tickets left for the Chelsea Handler show on April 4th. Does anyone know if Chewy is going to be there? To be honest, I want to see Chewy almost as much as I would love to see Chelsea Handler!

When Chelsea Handler was here last summer at Treasure Island Casino it was a very popular ticket. The show was far beyond sold out and a lot of fans were not able to attend because there were no tickets left.

What has replaced Louiepalooza's advertisement on the Northrop Auditorium page? Mariah Carey's face! While Northrop Auditorium tickets are not on sale yet for the Mariah Carey show at the Northrop there is a lot of talk about the show! There is a message that tells the details of the show have not been finalized, however, I wonder if the Northrop Auditorium knows that the concert is only about a month away.

There has not been an onsale date announced for the show yet, which is a little worry some to Mariah Carey fans. The concert is scheduled to be on February 16th - which is only a month away. The Northrop Auditorium's capacity is about 4500 people - that is a lot of tickets to get through in less than a month - and a Mariah Carey ticket onsale Minneapolis date has not been announced yet. What is a Mariah Carey fan to do that wants to buy Northrop Auditorium tickets for the Angels Advocate tour.

Northrop Parking

Did anyone go to the Louie Anderson shows yesterday? I heard that Northrop Auditorium tickets for both shows were sold out...?

A lot of people ask "Where to park when I go to the Northrop?" Well, to be honest parking close to the Northrop can be difficult. The Northrop Auditorium is located in the heart of the University of Minnesota's mall area and is surrounded, for the most part, by other campus buildings. There is one Northrop Auditorium parking ramp by the facility that sells out fast, especially if there is an event. Also, a lot of staff of the U of MN park in the Northrop ramp - so the spaces fill up quickly.

You can also park in the Washington Avenue ramp, which is never out of space, but is a ways from the Northrop Auditorium. I am an alumni of the U of MN so I know my way around the Northrop quite well, so getting from the ramp the Northrop Auditorium is not difficult. It is kind of a maze, the Northrop Auditorium is in the middle of the East Bank and the maps on campus are a little confusing.

So next time you have your Northrop Auditorium tickets for Louie Anderson, Mariah Carey, or one of their dance exhibitions remember to plan ahead when you are looking for Northrop Auditorium parking. The early bird definitely gets the worm (or the better parking spot!)
